Work in the Elliot lab focusses on the antibiotic-producing Streptomyces bacteria. Fully exploiting the antibiotic production capabilities of these bacteria requires a comprehensive understanding of their development, gene regulation and community behaviour. Using cutting-edge genetic, biochemical and cell biological approaches, members of the Elliot lab are working to understand how antibiotic production is controlled, are exploring how antibiotic production impacts microbial community interactions (and vice versa), and are developing powerful genetic tools to stimulate new antibiotic production.
